What's the Most Cost-Effective Weightlifting Shoe?

For the price point, the Adidas Powerlift 4 offer a great combination of price and performance. They're a cost-effective option and offer great support with a sturdy base.

Why Should You Buy Powerlifting Shoes?

Powerlifting or weightlifting shoes are shoes specifically designed to aid in the performance of the main lifts.

From sturdiness, flat-secure surface, elevated heel, and a snug fit around the mid foot: these shoes facilitate high-level of performance at heavy weights. Or weights that are performed explosively (as is the case in weightlifting).

Squatting or deadlifting in running shoes has a number of issues:

  • The squishy sole does not provide a stable squatting or pulling platform
  • You might have micro-disturbances in balance (not noticeable to you but impactful to the lift, nonetheless.
  • The lack of a heel lift might not provide favorable ankle positioning like a weightlifting should would.
  • It is also not a flat surface that would be better suitable for deadlifts

What's the Heel Height of the Powerlift 4?

The heel height of the powerlift 4 are .6". It's modest and suitable for handling load under heavyweights over the more aggressive 3/4" heel lift ones (at least in my opinion)

My Experience W/ the Adidas Powerlift 4

The Powerlift 4 were my first powerlifting shoes. For many years, I wore regular running shoes that were beat up beyond what is socially acceptable.

After I tried squatting for the first time, I immediately knew that I would refuse to squat in any other way (that wasn’t in powerlifting shoes).

First, it felt much easier to get into perfect squatting form due to the heel lift.

Second, they felt far more secure and stable than running shoes. This was without a doubt the first thing that I noticed.

And third, in some ways, it gets me ready for a heavy squat day. Because I generally use them always when squatting, my body has become conditioned to the idea that once the strap has been secured – it’s time to start squatting.

Call it a “Pavlovian Association” – the mental effect is real. Maybe even placebo. But after doing over 5,000 reps of squats on these shoes: I have not wanted to go back or change.

They also haven’t lost a lick of quality since the day I bought them. But maybe you haven’t turned over to the dark side. Why should YOU squat in these shoes?

In short, weightlifting (or powerlifting) shoes provide lifters with a number of benefits, particularly in the squat.

    • Raised heel for better ankle positioning (this helps you get into better squat position)
    • Sturdy & hard surface suited for handling heavy loads (as opposed to a squishy one)
    • Straps for a secure & snug fit on the mid foot
    • Athletic aesthetic that actually looks pretty cool

That last point might not be a selling point for everyone but there are some for which it is a must.

Should You Buy The Adidas Powerlift 4?

Yes, I do. For a number of reasons. Here are some pros:

  • Price point: $99
  • AdiWear Technology: known around the industry for longevity durability
  • Comfort & feel
  • General bad-assery

I think the biggest selling point these shoes have are their general durability, longevity, performance, and price point.

They are reasonably priced, well made shoes that are great for lifters at any level of advancement. If I were to advise a close friend or even a younger me, I would gift them this pair as their introduction to powerlifting shoes.
